Hexagonal BN (h-BN) crucible made of ceramic. The most common polymorph is hexagonal BN. It lubricates well at both low and high temperatures (up to 900 °C in an oxidising environment). When the electrical conductivity or chemical reactivity of graphite (another lubricant) is a concern, h-BN lubricant comes in handy.

Another advantage of h-BN over graphite is that its lubricate is not dependent on trapped water or gas molecules. As a result, hexagonal boron nitride powder lubricants can be employed in vacuum environments, such as space applications. Fine-grained h-BN is utilised in cosmetics, paints, dental cements, and pencil leads because of its lubricating characteristics.

The history and utility of Hexagonal Boron Nitride powder

Around 1940, hexagonal  boron nitride powder was first used in cosmetics in Japan. h-BN, on the other hand, was quickly abandoned for this application due to its excessive cost. With the optimization of h-BN production methods in the late 1990s, its use was rejuvenated, and it is now employed by nearly all top cosmetics companies for foundations, make-up, eye shadows, blushers, kohl pencils, lipsticks, and other skincare items.

Boron nitride ceramics have long been employed as parts of high-temperature equipment because to their outstanding thermal and chemical stability. h-BN can be used to add self-lubricating qualities to ceramics, metals, resins, plastics, rubbers, and other materials. Such materials are appropriate for use in the manufacture of bearings and steel. BN-filled plastics exhibit lower thermal expansion, better thermal conductivity, and lower electrical resistance. BN is utilised in electronics as a substrate for semiconductors, microwave-transparent windows, and structural material for sealing due to its excellent dielectric and thermal properties.

Hexagonal BN is utilised as a charge leakage barrier layer of the photo drum in xerographic processes and laser printers. h-BN combined with a binder (boron oxide) is used in the automotive sector to seal oxygen sensors, which offer input for changing fuel flow. The binder takes advantage of h-exceptional BN's thermal stability and insulating characteristics. As an abrasive, cubic boron nitride is commonly utilised. Its utility stems from its high-temperature insolubility in iron, nickel, and similar alloys.
